Pétanque score tracker, approved by everyone who played.

Throw heavy steel balls and get closest to a small target ball. log8 keeps the score with the people you actually play. Record the winner or a draw, with the score if you have it. The other players approve it, and your head-to-head record, group board and personal history build themselves.

The basics

How to play Pétanque

The casual version of the rules. log8 shows the same guide in the app, on the game's page.

  • Players2 to 6. In singles and doubles each player has 3 boules. In triples each has 2.
  • How to winBe the first team to reach 13 points.
  • The official gameThe FIPJP writes the rules. Boules are steel, between 650 and 800 grams.
  • How groups differBocce, boules and lawn bowls are close cousins with their own rules. Casual games often play to 11 points. Agree before you start.
  1. Toss a coin. The winners draw a circle on the ground and throw the small target ball, called the cochonnet, 6 to 10 metres.
  2. Throw your first boule from inside the circle, with both feet on the ground, so it lands near the cochonnet.
  3. Then the other team throws. Whoever is not closest keeps throwing until they take the lead or run out.
  4. When all the boules are thrown, the closest team scores 1 point for each boule closer than the other team’s best.
  5. The team that scored starts the next round, from where the cochonnet landed.
