The basics
How to play Chess
The casual version of the rules. log8 shows the same guide in the app, on the game's page.
- Players2 players. One plays white, one plays black.
- How to winCheckmate. Attack the king so it has no safe square to move to.
- The official gameOfficial games use a clock. If you touch one of your pieces, you have to move it.
- White moves first. Then you take turns, one move each.
- Each piece moves its own way. Pawns go forward, rooks go straight, bishops go diagonally, the queen does both, knights jump in an L, the king steps one square.
- Move onto an enemy piece to capture it.
- If your king is under attack, that is check. You must get it out of danger straight away.
- A pawn that reaches the far side turns into any piece. Most people pick a queen.
- Two special moves: castling, where the king and a rook move together, and en passant, a sideways pawn capture.
- It is a draw if nobody can win, the same position comes up three times, or you both agree.

- Take the middle squares early.
- Bring out knights and bishops before your queen.
- Castle early to keep your king safe.
- Before every move, ask what your opponent is threatening.

- The other players approveFriends on log8 get 48 hours to approve it, or tap Disagree if it is wrong. Guests count straight away. A result nobody answers closes without counting.
- Your record updatesOnce it is official it counts toward your head-to-head records, group board, badges and cups.

Yes. Chess is one of the 72 built-in games. Record the winner or a draw. The other players approve it, then it counts.
