Why we write things down
log8 is a scorebook, so it should keep its own notes too. Here is what this blog is for.
log8 exists because the games we play with friends deserve a better record than a group chat that scrolls away. A scorebook is only worth anything if people trust it, so the whole app is built around one idea: a result counts when the people who played it agree.
We think the same goes for how we build it. If you are trusting log8 with years of rivalries, you should be able to see how it works and why it works that way. So we are writing it down.
What you will find here
- System design. How the pieces fit together, written for anyone curious and detailed enough for engineers: how a result becomes official, how a photo gets from your phone to your friends’, how the app keeps working when your signal does not, and what we would do differently.
- Founder’s corner. The product decisions behind the app, including the things we have chosen not to build.
Choices we will explain
Some of what makes log8 log8 is what it leaves out. Expect posts on why:
- there is no public directory of players, and your record is shared only with the people you played;
- there is no skill rating next to your name, only the results you and your friends agreed on;
- you log a game after it is played, not before;
- the app will not nudge you to play more, and has no advertising identifier or analytics SDK.
News and the blog
News is where we post what changed in the app and when it reaches the stores. This blog is where we explain the thinking. If there is something you would like us to write about, email social@log8.in.
